Tolon District (Formerly Tolon/Kumbugu District) was carved out of the then Western Dagomba District in 1998. The President H.E. J.E.A Mills, by an Executive Instrument (E.I) created 46 new Districts. In the year 2012 the district was divided and separated from Kumbugu .the newly created districts were inaugurated at their various locations simultaneously on the 28th June, 2012. All the inaugurated and confirmed MMDAs established are operational with immediate effect hence bringing the total number of MMDAs to 216. Tolon District is among twenty (26) districts in the Northern Region with Tolon as its administrative capital. The district shares borders with North Gonja to the West, Kumbungu District to the North, Central Gonja to the south and to the East with Tamale Metropolitan.

The Tolon District Assembly has the responsibility for the overall development of the district. In its bid to help transform the living conditions of the people, a lot of interventions have been made in the water, sanitation, education, health, local government and rural electrification.
Quite apart from the provision of development infrastructure in the above mentioned development areas, the district assembly has provided the needed congenial atmosphere including a serene environment for development to thrive.
TOLON: Two NGOs donate computers to schools Five basic schools in the Tolon and Kumbungu Districts have received 40 Flat screen computers to improve their knowledge in Information and Communication Technology (ICT), as well as academic standards.
TOLON: Education director worried over falling standards Mr Amoli Abako, the Tolon District Director of Education, has expressed worry about the consistent falling standards in the performance of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in the district and said it needed a holistic approach to reverse the trend.
